Guide to Landing a Job at Outbrain

If you’re wondering how to get a job at Outbrain, let’s first zoom out to the bigger picture. We know the job market is booming. “We are hiring” signs are to be seen everywhere, from LinkedIn to Twitter to the high streets in shop windows. It is such a global reality, it has been called The Great Resignation. This is probably one of the many consequences of COVID. It may well be happening because some of us realized: we are not machines. Yes, we want to find a job that is meaningful to us.

Millions of people are looking for new career opportunities as we speak. And when we look for a new challenge, it is hard to know how it is going to be once we join. After all, us recruiters can only show you so much. This is why tools like Glassdoor are so powerful. It enables job seekers to read real reviews and have a more comprehensive understanding of working at a particular organization.

Why Work Culture Matters

But back to the machines! People are not machines. And that’s why employer culture is so important. A better salary and funky swag is nice to have. However, ensuring you join a business with strong values around mental health and wellbeing is crucial for the long run.

What Organizations are Thinking…

On the other side of the story, organizations are hungry for new talent. According to a recent survey, 87% of organizations are already experiencing a talent shortage or are expecting to face it within a few years. In fact, according to statistics released by ManpowerGroup, staff turnover in the US IT industry ranks at 13.2%, which is the highest attrition index among all industries. And, Israel – one of the top three fastest-developing tech startup nations – is experiencing a 15% software developer shortage. This leads to an extremely competitive market in which, as mentioned before, high salaries and flashy benefits can eclipse what really matters. According to the Talent Accelerator survey, what really matters to employees is actually a culture that encourages diversity and inclusion, flexible work based on trust, and a new way to measure and achieve professional growth.

How to Get a Job at Outbrain: Understanding Our Values

As a recruiter at Outbrain, one of the best parts of my job is introducing people to a company with incredible values: trust, support, teamwork, innovation, transparency and integrity. Many candidates first approach me because of Outbrain’s innovative product and technologies. But once they get a glance of the company values and how we work together, they fall in love with Outbrain! I shared with you earlier why Glassdoor is so important, right? Well,  90% of Glassdoor reviewers would recommend Outbrain to a friend, 96% approve of the CEO, and our average score is an impressive 4.4.

Let me take you through our recruitment journey and show you how we find the best talent in the industry. It will also help you understand the process of how to apply for a job at Outbrain, if you’ve decided that’s your goal!

Landing a Job at Outbrain: The Recruitment Journey: Step by Step

Apply to Outbrain online: Just 3 clicks to your dream job!

Applying online is really easy, even on your smartphone, by sharing your LinkedIn profile or submitting a CV. After that, our recruitment team receives a notification  showing us all new applicants ready for screening. No matter which job you apply for, make sure your CV is formatted in a way that is easy to read and understand. Clear bullet points and descriptions will help us recruiters get a better understanding of what you have to offer. And please, don’t be shy –  add something personal about yourself that helps us learn more about you.

Now, your application moves from the recruitment team to the hiring manager, responsible for the position. The hiring manager reviews all applicant CVs before we speak to you for the first time. We are all one team, collaborating together to find the best talent and build the best team. After receiving the thumbs up for your CV, the next step is an initial phone call with the recruiter. We want to learn more about you. What were your previous roles? Why do you want to join Outbrain? How did you find out about us? Read and absorb as much information as you can before the call. That way, we can respond to any questions you may have in preparation for the next steps.

The interview stage: Let the show begin

Remember, the recruiter is your ally! We will always try to support you as much as we can with tips and ideas to ensure your interviews go smoothly. If you are still keen on exploring the role after speaking to our recruitment team, the next steps will be a professional Zoom interview with the team lead, the hiring manager and, depending on the role, another member of the team separately. Take that opportunity to get more intel on the day to day tasks. Also, learn about the vision of the role, as well as the potential for growth.

As mentioned earlier, don’t be shy. We want to get to know you, so come ready with questions! When you meet the team, it is a good idea to ask them about their experience. That way, you can learn how they adapted to the job, their onboarding process, and the team values. After every meeting, we will share feedback with you, so we are all on the same page. This will be either on the phone or via email.

Presentation time: Show us your superpower!

It is time to shine! Presentations, demos, and pitches are a great way for us to see you in action. We know it is not easy, and presenting in front of new people can be intimidating. Think of this step as a conversation, and a chance to get to know each other, so we can learn more about your expertise.

Remember, when you are preparing for a presentation, ensure you have a stable internet connection and your laptop is fully charged. Check that there is good lighting for the camera, and you are in a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. Also, don’t forget your notepad and pen to take notes if you need to … and have a glass of water handy! We all get nervous, and it helps to take a quick sip of water and breathe.

Reference checks: The home stretch

If you made it this far… you are already a winner! As Mark Cuban famously said, “Business is the ultimate sport. It’s 7x24x365xforever.” The next step is a check of your references, which only if successful, will lead to an offer!

And remember: be you, be cool, be transparent, and enjoy the recruitment journey!
